Rare Welsh hand woven three fringed carthen from Penwern Mill, Cribyn just outside Lampeter in Ceredigion.
Woven C1920 in characteristic reverse twill with contrasting stripes of violet, emerald green & rich red against the natural undyed cream. It has a spectacular border along both long fringed sides & criss crossing the warp ends in dark reds and greens – altogether a real beauty.
A soft 2 ply yarn. Pure wool and 86 x 75 inches
Rare antique Welsh narrow loom carthen/blanket. Woven in heavy weight 2 ply yarn with thick fringes on two sides. Woven in two pieces on a narrow loom & hand sewn together to create a bigger bedcover and dates from the late 19th century 1890/1900 . Possibly Ammanford area.
It has a complicated design consisting of some weft facing overcheck. A ground colour in natural cream & sand in a plain weave with overshot squares using a reverse twill as well as a raised plain weave in tram lines and lovely thick fringes. This is a skilfully woven pattern with detail in duck egg blue and soft chocolate browns. It measures 72 x 86 inches excluding Fringes
Vintage Welsh blanket/carthen made in Derw Mill in the 1950’s and carries it’s original label, This carthen is in excellent condition with thick fringes along two sides and the ends are blanket stitched . It has a lovely green & ivory ground in a birdseye weave with stripes and zigzag bands in ivory and coral pink.
